The final write up from 19th April 2022And so it was that I would be hosting my last night of Backgammon in Fulham after twelve years of doing so. Nicole kept on asking me if I felt emotional – I could sense she was feeling emotional on my behalf. Either that or she was just terrified at the prospect of taking on the hosting of one of London’s best BG Clubs. No, I didn’t feel emotional but I will admit to feeling a little bit sad on the long drive home but this was soon overcome at the relief that I would no longer have to do that lonely late-night drive back to the Chilterns again.
Tuesday’s Results Enough about my emotions, what about the Backgammon played? A solid turnout meant that we could run three tournaments won by the following.
The Mid-Roller had a mixed bag of £10 and £20 players as we had another debutante, Jean King, collecting first prize here. Although new to Fulham BG, Jean is not new to the game and after this success she may be tempted to take a healthy stroll down the King’s Road to Parson’s Green more often (or at least jump on the ever-dependable No. 14 bus). Mr Bye gratefully accepted the Wooden Spoon saving any other players any embarrassing blushes. Finally, the not so Low Roller, as they had all chucked a tenner in, saw Lorna Vestey see off challenges from Jack Ellery, Julia Toller and Nicole Coleman. Jack Ellery always the gracious loser collected the Wooden Spoon with gritted-teeth delight. Thanks to everyone that came along to my last session, I hope you will continue to show Nicole & Alex as they take over as much support as you have shown me. All Tuesday’s results here End of year standings and other notable awards 2022 Player of the Year This was all set up to be a close run contest between second-placed Alex Ellerington and the table leader Adam Taylor. There was no hiding Alex’s delight when news came in that Adam was stuck on the hard-shoulder of the motorway and would be unable to come in. Hard luck Adam but at least you found a hard shoulder to break down on. Alex just had to stay calm and cruise through his final tournament. An early 5-0 win over Richard Onslow and Alex already had a little celebratory jig in his step. Probably one more win would seal it but even that evaded him as he lost his second round match to Stefan Stefansson. Then it was his old buddy Dee Jeffrey in his final match; surely he would win this as anyone who has ever sat next to Dee knows she is the unluckiest player on the planet. But the Dice Gods are mischievous at the best of times and decided at that very point in the history of the world they would give Dee the dice from heaven that would mean Alex would slump to his second defeat. Meanwhile, galloping up on the rail was Lorna Vestey who had started the evening as the rank outsider for the Championship suddenly finding herself in the position of needing to win her final match in the Low Roller to secure the title. Poor Alex was distraught and certainly if I was in a playful mood I might question whether Nicole had put up a strong enough fight in her match against Lorna but that would lead to some rather frosty exchanges around the breakfast table so best leave it at that. Congratulations to Lorna on a great year so far:
Highest Rated Player in 2022 Tad Collins’ shock appearance at the final session meant he just slipped in under the wire to become the highest rated this year with a rating of 1739.84 but his two defeats on Tuesday meant he could not take the accolade for the all-time highest rated player as that went to the long-time absentee Gerald O’Rourke on 1763.6 (not least due to his very impressive 78% win rate over his 37 matches) Most attendances in 2022 Alistair Hill (8) attended every session in 2022 but he’s got a car that never breaks down. Most First Place finishes in 2022 Lorna Vestey (4) Most Second Place finishes in 2022 And cruelly no first-place finishes for Ipek Kursunoglu (3) Most matches won in 2022 Lorna Vestey (14) Most matches lost in 2022 Alistair Hill (16) but he did play many more matches than anyone else and always with a gracious smile...and he’s got a car that never breaks down. Most impressive win rate in 2022 Lorna Vestey (78% over eighteen matches)
